What to Include in a Lighting BOQ (With Example)

Lighting layout drawing with sample downlights and a switch on a designer desk

Quick answer: A useful lighting BOQ lists each fitting type with a reference code, location, full specification, quantity and any preferred brand, and is sent with drawings and reference photos. The clearer the BOQ, the faster and more accurate your quotation.

A bill of quantities (BOQ) is the quickest way to get an accurate quotation for a lighting or electrical package. The clearer it is, the fewer questions come back and the easier it is to compare options. Here is what a useful lighting BOQ contains.

Item reference and location

Give each fitting type a reference code that matches your drawings, and note where it is used. This makes it easy to check quantities against the layout.

Description and key specifications

Include the fitting type, wattage, colour temperature, beam angle, finish, dimensions and IP rating where relevant. If you have a preferred brand or model, state it and say whether an equivalent is acceptable.

Quantity and unit

List quantities per item, and separate phases or floors if delivery will be staged.

Supporting documents

Attach reference photos, drawings and datasheets whenever you can. A single image often removes any doubt about what is intended.

Delivery details

Add the site location and your target dates so lead times can be checked against your programme.

Already have a BOQ? Upload it on our Request a Quote page and we will come back with options and pricing.

Common mistakes that delay quotations

  • Descriptions such as “LED light” with no wattage, size or colour
  • No colour temperature, which leads to mismatched fittings
  • Missing IP rating for outdoor and wet areas
  • Quantities that do not match the drawings
  • No indication of whether an equivalent brand is acceptable
  • No delivery location or target date

“Or equivalent”: use it carefully

Allowing equivalents gives your supplier room to offer better value or faster delivery. If a specific product is essential to the design, say so clearly. For everything else, state the minimum specification an alternative must meet.

What if I do not have a BOQ?

You do not need one to get started. Send us your drawings, a mood board or photos of what you like, and we will help you build the list. Products that are not available in Bangladesh can be imported to order.
