Switch and Socket Buying Guide for Your Home

White 4 gang light switch and wall socket on a grey wall

Quick answer: Choose switches and sockets by function first: the number of gangs (buttons on one plate), the way (how many places control one light), and the amp rating for the appliance. Then choose a genuine brand and a finish that matches your interior.

Switches and sockets are a small part of a home’s budget, but you touch them every day and they carry all the electricity in the house. A poor-quality switch feels loose within months. A poor-quality socket can overheat. This guide explains the terms and helps you plan what you need.

What do gang and way mean?

  • Gang is the number of switches on a single plate. A 1 gang switch has one button, a 4 gang switch has four.
  • Way is the number of locations that control the same light. A 1 way switch controls a light from one place. A 2 way switch lets you control one light from two places, such as both ends of a staircase or both sides of a bedroom.

So a 4 gang 1 way switch has four buttons on one plate, each controlling a different light from that single position.

Amp ratings: matching the socket to the appliance

  • Lighting switches are commonly rated 10A or 16AX.
  • General sockets for televisions, chargers and small appliances are typically 13A.
  • High-load appliances such as air conditioners, water heaters and ovens need higher-rated sockets or dedicated switches, usually 20A or more, on their own circuit.

Always confirm appliance loads with your electrician. Using an under-rated socket for a heavy appliance is a fire risk.

Safety features worth paying for

  • Child-safety shutters on socket openings
  • Flame-retardant body material
  • Solid brass or copper contacts that grip plugs firmly
  • Clear markings and recognised certification

Choosing a finish

White suits most interiors and is easiest to match later. Grey, black and metallic finishes look striking in modern homes, but order a few spares, because matching a special finish years later can be difficult. Keep one range throughout the house so every plate lines up.

Why genuine products matter

Copies of well-known switch brands are common. They look similar on the wall but use thinner contacts and cheaper plastic. Buy genuine switches from a seller who can confirm authenticity and offers warranty. We supply original products from brands such as Schneider Electric.

How many do you need?

Count every light circuit, fan, appliance and charging point room by room, then add a few spare sockets. Running out of sockets is the most common regret in a new home. For a whole apartment or building, send us your electrical drawing or quantity list and we will price it as one order.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between 1 way and 2 way switches?

A 1 way switch controls a light from one place. A 2 way switch is used in pairs so that the same light can be controlled from two places.

Can I use a normal socket for an air conditioner?

No. Air conditioners need a higher-rated socket or switch on a dedicated circuit. Ask your electrician to confirm the correct rating.

Do you supply switches for whole buildings?

Yes. We supply developers and contractors in project quantities. Send your BOQ for pricing.
