Quick answer: Good restaurant lighting is warm, layered and dimmable. Use pendants or focused downlights to light each table, keep the surrounding area softer, choose warm white with high colour rendering so food looks appetising, and put every layer on a dimmer so the mood can change from lunch to dinner.
Guests decide how they feel about a restaurant within seconds of walking in, and lighting does most of that work. It affects how long people stay, how the food looks in photos and whether the space feels premium or ordinary. Here is how to get it right.
Start with the mood you want
- Fine dining: low, warm, intimate light with pools on each table.
- Casual dining and family restaurants: brighter and more even, but still warm.
- Cafes: bright and welcoming by day, softer in the evening, with good light for reading and working.
- Fast food and food courts: bright, energetic light that encourages quick turnover.

Light the tables, not the floor
The table is where guests look. A pendant light hung 70 to 90 cm above each table creates a pool of light on the food and leaves faces softly lit. Where pendants are not practical, use narrow-beam downlights aimed at table centres. Avoid lighting the walkways more brightly than the tables.

Choose warm white with high CRI
Warm white between 2700K and 3000K makes food and skin tones look their best. Just as important is colour rendering. A fitting with CRI 90 or above shows the real colours of a dish. Low CRI light makes even good food look flat. See our guide to warm white vs cool white.

Build in layers
- Ambient: concealed cove light or soft downlights for overall glow.
- Task: table pendants, counter lighting, and bright, practical light in the kitchen and at the cash point.
- Accent: spotlights on artwork, shelves, the bar and textured walls.
- Decorative: a statement chandelier or cluster of pendants that becomes part of your identity.
Make everything dimmable
The same restaurant needs different light at 1 pm and 9 pm. Group lights into circuits and add dimmers, so staff can change the atmosphere without changing fittings. Check that drivers and dimmers are compatible before you buy.
Do not forget the outside
The entrance and signage decide whether people walk in. Use weatherproof outdoor lights with a suitable IP rating at the door, on the facade and in any outdoor seating.
Design for photos
Guests share what they eat. Even, warm, glare-free light on the table produces better photos than harsh light from directly overhead, and that is free marketing.
Mistakes to avoid
- Cool white light in dining areas
- Bare bright sources at eye level that cause glare
- One switch for the whole room
- Pendants hung too high to light the table, or too low to see across it
- Mixing colour temperatures between fittings
- Decorative fittings that cannot be cleaned easily near the kitchen
Sourcing fittings for a restaurant
Restaurants often need a specific design in a specific quantity, and it is rarely in stock locally. Send us your interior drawing, mood board or photos and we will price the whole package. Where a fitting is not available in Bangladesh, we import it for you. See our hospitality lighting solutions.
Frequently asked questions
What colour light is best for a restaurant?
Warm white between 2700K and 3000K, with a colour rendering index of 90 or above, so that food and skin tones look natural.
How high should pendant lights hang over restaurant tables?
About 70 to 90 cm above the table top is a good starting point. It lights the table without blocking the view across it.
Can you supply matching lights for a whole restaurant?
Yes. We supply and import fittings in project quantities so every table and area matches.
