Chandelier Size Guide: How to Choose the Right One

Round crystal chandelier sized for a living room seating area

Quick answer: Add the length and width of the room in feet and use the total as the chandelier diameter in inches. Over a dining table, choose a chandelier about half to two-thirds of the table width and hang it 75 to 90 cm above the table.

A chandelier is usually the most visible fitting in a room, so size matters more than with any other light. Too small and it disappears. Too large and it dominates the space. These simple rules will get you close before you start comparing designs.

Working out the diameter

A widely used rule of thumb is to add the length and width of the room in feet and treat the total as the chandelier diameter in inches. A room of 12 ft by 14 ft gives 26, so a chandelier of around 26 inches (about 65 cm) is a sensible starting point. Go larger for high ceilings and open-plan spaces, and smaller if the room already has a lot of visual detail.

Over a dining table

Size the chandelier to the table, not the room. Aim for a diameter between half and two-thirds of the table width, and keep it narrower than the table so nobody bumps into it when standing up. The bottom should hang roughly 75 to 90 cm above the table top.

In a living room or lobby

In rooms where people walk underneath, keep the lowest point of the chandelier well above head height. With double-height ceilings and stairwells, a taller, multi-tier design fills the vertical space better than a wide, flat one.

Crystal, glass or modern?

  • Crystal chandeliers reflect light and suit formal living and dining rooms, hotels and event spaces.
  • Glass and metal designs are lighter visually and easier to clean.
  • Modern ring chandeliers give a clean, contemporary look and spread light evenly.

Practical checks

  • Weight, and whether your ceiling fixing can carry it
  • Number and type of lamps, and how easy they are to replace
  • Dimmer compatibility
  • Cleaning access, especially for crystal

How much height do you need?

In a room where people walk underneath, allow at least 7 ft from the floor to the lowest point of the chandelier. With a standard 9 ft ceiling that leaves limited drop, so choose a wider, shallower design. Tall multi-tier chandeliers belong in double-height living rooms, stairwells and lobbies.

How bright should a chandelier be?

A chandelier is often decorative rather than the main light. Pair it with recessed downlights for everyday brightness and put the chandelier on a dimmer, so it can glow softly in the evening.

Looking after a crystal chandelier

  • Switch off and let the lamps cool before cleaning.
  • Dust regularly with a soft, dry cloth.
  • For a deeper clean, wipe each crystal with a cloth lightly dampened with glass cleaner rather than spraying the fitting.
  • Check fixings periodically, especially in rooms with ceiling fans.

Ordering a specific size or design

Hotels, banquet halls and large homes often need a size that is not stocked locally. We import chandeliers to order in the diameter, tiers and finish you need.

Frequently asked questions

What size chandelier do I need for a 12 by 12 room?

Around 24 inches (60 cm) in diameter is a good starting point for a 12 ft by 12 ft room.

Can I hang a chandelier from a false ceiling?

Yes, but the fixing must go through to the structural slab. Gypsum board alone cannot carry the weight.

Do chandeliers work with ceiling fans?

It is better to avoid placing a chandelier close to a fan, because of moving shadows and vibration. Use separate zones of the room where possible.
